Architectural design is now often featured in magazines, TV and YouTube.
It seems everybody regards architectural design is for public, completely free subject for everybody to discuss.
Design is freedom, open to anybody! It is sometimes even regarded as a kind of symbol which frees old fashioned life style or habits.
But is that true?
Sometimes in fact a kind of great design breaks through old habits and it leads to new era, like iPhone did few years before.
Like such industrial design, also some kinds of architectural design breaks through the time and spread new style of life.
But still architecture is made one by one. And it basically belongs to its owner.
Architecture is totally a personal thing.
So its design in detail also very personal, which is not circulatable.
In a meaning, spirit of architectural design cannot be circulated via media, though a lot of architectural images are overflowing in Instagram, Pinterest and a lots of web site in internet.

In such context, I recall what Louise Kahn said. "A great building must begin with the unmeasurable, must go through measurable means when it is being designed and in the end must be unmeasurable."


Probably that is now what he wanted to say, but I assume like below.

Architectural design begins from unmeasurable expectation, personal vision and uncirculatable imagination.
But it has to be done by measurable tools, actual companies in public, circulating info/materials.
Finally, it is going to be again unmeasurable by assembling all particular parts for only one time work, not replicable, very personal thing for owner and uncirculatable thing containing owner's whole life.

Still we need to use measurable tools to build and we need to rely on media to circulate soft material and hard material.
Google Earth helps site survey. Pinterest is useful to search for world design treand and even share image between owner. Even university students can create beautiful rendering image of skyscraper using free 3d modeling software without any experience in actual architectural design work.
But to achieve real architectural work, we need a kind of experience.
That might be ability to go back and forth between measurable and unmeasurable.
And we better not forget that very core of architectural design is something very personal, though it stands out in the middle of the city.
Is that going to be a hint for architects (especially working in a small atelier office) how to survive?

Excessiveness

Balance is always important in the world.

How to maintain sustainable environment on earth?
How to avoid conflict between nations?
How to keep developing a company?
How to reserve peace in a family......

In order to control total balance, sometimes we together with other parties, establish system to observe and restrict excessiveness of one party.

But in case, if people too much rely on observing and restricting system, world will get boring.

In addition, some kind of achievement can be always and only by something very special and strong motivation.
That kinds of motivation sometimes cannot be explained logically.
People are sometimes moved by unreasonable, unconsious and inexplicable motive.

Those shall not be used for excuse for crimes or terro attacks.
But in actual scene in culture, economy, sports or etc. it might be quite true that these kinds of unreasonable, unconsious and inexplicable motive, excessiveness or singularity always had changed the history and the world.
Somehow, excessiveness or singularity is leading or controlling the world.

In that context, measuring just distance by ordinary fixed ruler is totally useless.

How to evaluate, monitor and measure distance to in integrated ruler, excessiveness will be big theme for the world, nation, company and family.

Density of distance

Sometimes, we hesitate to approach to some kinds of people even though distance between the person and ourselves is same as distance between friends and ourselves.

We can say, that is psychological distance rather than physical distance.
But in another words, there is a density in distance, which works as resistance factor.

Not only measuring distance between 2 objects, but also identifying density, resistance factor, weight of distance is important.

Immeasurable...

I was trapped by the word “distance” almost 20 years before.
And started this kind of blog to memorize for myself.
“Distancology” is half joke but half serious for me.

But sometimes we have to admit, there are things we cannot measure......

- Death
- One-sided love
- Conflict
- Dream

Or etc.

Previously I idiotically imagined such “Distancology” can suggest a hint or help people to solve problems in their lives. Something like a methodology or even a Philosofy.

But the real issues in a life are far beyond “distance”.

Still, or rather, that’s why, I would like to continue silly blog!

Meaning of discussing about Distance?

Is any meaning or merit in discussing about Distance?

Reason I started writing the blog from view point of distance is just because I am not good at measuring distance in life.

But I imagine, we who are living in the world, where global economy violently unites a whole world in a second, while on the other hand a lot of nationalism is arising in each area of the world.

In such a condition, how to measure the world might be a key to explore the world.
To measure distance between 2 objects in front of oneself and to measure distance from oneself to the objects, both.

And what kind of stories in the Distance itself we can find out might be also a key to enjoy the life.
Some kind of distance in real life never disapeare unfortunately, however, (or rather) that's why we can enjoy the life.

As a trial, some memos are trying to analyse Movie, Music or whatever from the view point of Distance.
From my view, impressive movies contain a lot of Distance in different phases which gives the movies richness.
And the most impressive ones sometimes suggest unmeasurable Distance.
Unmeasurable means "unable to describe in text" but those great movie shows or embrace that unmeasurable Distance in a picture, that is the real pleasure of a movie, I believe.

It might be called composition of plots or the theme, I guess. If we analyse movies every time from the view poin of Distance, it would be boring and spoil the great movies.
But it may give us a hint to our real life.

As for the traffic light, color of "To Go" is called "Green" in many countries, while people in some countries call that "Blue".
That is not only for the traffic light. Sometimes people call immature person as "green" in English, but in other language, they are called "blue".

What is the distance of blue and green?
Superficially just a distance in frequency spectrum?

Ancient people needed to symbolize all the facts in front of us to communicate in certain rule, I guess.
That's why they invented the word 'Green" or "Blue", area by area.
And that is linguistic system.

How could this symbolized linguistic system cover the area which occupy between "Green" and "Blue"?

Huge unknown crevice exists in our daily lives.
Still so many things we can find as an adventurous explorer!

Timeless design / Distance-less Design

Internet is the space without Sense of Distance, in a meaning.
That is not only people can connect each other beyond physical Distance, but also because people can edit content anytime from anywhere.
No sense of Settlement.
People cannot measure distance if the objects are always moving.

To leave a footprint on the ground as a record to cross the distance.
Or to forget about the footprint behind to scrawl the world.

Both necessary for life, maybe.

distance from the past till now

Sometimes we look back the past and notice that I come from there till now by selecting some particular options.
We do not notice when we are doing something, especially when suffering or struggling.
And after a while, we came to the point and found some distance which we walked all the way to there.
That is time distance from the past till now and sometimes another distance which we experienced and which is very hard to measure. Maybe that is the age.

I sometimes did look back and thought "was that the best option for me to take?"

But recently I also noticed "when I chose that option, that was the best I thought at that time." So no need to look back too much and no need to regret some choice even if the other option looks much more attractive now. I should respect myself of that age.

To talk about distance between the past and now is not to think about other options we could select, but to sharpen the sense for selecting options by looking back.

To start new year of 2015, just reminding the above to myself.

What will happen to me this year?
What do I want to achieve this year?
How much can I enjoy this year?

And how much can I develop "Distance" this year?

Distance inside distance?

Once there are two reference points, there exists distance.

As I mentioned, perception or understanding of that distance will be different depending on the view point. That means there would be "Distance" even between perception of that distance from each other.

How can we handle these?

Distance contained distance itself.

Or is that the fate and character of Distance? 

Depth of Distance

Related to previous thread (distance from each side), not only perception of distance is different but also depth of distance also differ by person by person.

Experience or age is always the factor. But also nationality or cultural (in many meanings) back ground will affect.

And I believe that will not only make bad for the people. Sometimes this small gaps between person by person will create much more dramatic life for each.

Most of love stories in the world are generated by these kind of small gaps by perception or depth of distance.

Life is filled with full of Distance, but that's why it is fulfilled with full of happiness or secret of life.

Distance will be observed from both side, because distance can only exist when there is two different point.

But of course depending on each experience or value, perception of distance differ.
So even if it seems they are discussing about same distance, sometimes they discuss totally different thing.

One of the idea is to hire somebody else for fare judgement for that distance like universal code, but for our general daily life, we need to rely on our own intuition or somebody's advice.

There would be no correct answer, which distance would be correct. Rather, at least, to be sure that distance can be different from view point by view point is basic requirement for all persons for each matter.

And what kind of happy misinterpretation occur will save the world, I would like to believe, though such idea is a childish dream I really know.

Distance in Blog system

I started (actually resumed several years after registration) this blog recently to just leave a memorandum for myself to think about Distance. So I am writing randomly from what I thought about. I often start writing very roughly first and edit (or sometimes totally revise) it very later on. I wrote from PC at home or sometimes from mobile phone during biz trip in other countries.

I am not sure about the detail of this blog system or even internet system, but anyway all appeared in the web.

How did these thoughts or texts travel these invisible distances and where did these to be stored?

Really childish and old fashioned query to information technology but still mysterious and somehow fantastic, though based on actual technology......

Painting

Some people seem to jump into the painting's world when they see their favorite paintings. I happen to realize this by reading a mystery novel about Henry Rousseau.
I do sometimes go to museums and see a lot art works, but for me, they are still objects to be see.
I keep distance to observe, examine, understand or even think another things. But people who really love painting will not take distance to observe. They will directly dive into the world which the painting provide and live together with the artist or the object.
Painting is usually believed to be as an existence to be seen. But once the painting grab somebody's heart, suddenly the distance between the painting and the person disappear.
I understand such thing often happen in many medias in art, but almost forgot this may still happen in the classic art of 2d painting world.
What have I seen or experienced in museums till now?

Ballet

Last weekend, I went to see a rehearsal for ballet performance for kids.
It was fun to see my daughters' performance though it appeared not so much different from some comical performances when they did at kindergarten few years before.

But some of elder girls in the class show some high quality performance.
I am totally amateur about Ballet, I have never seen real ballet performance.

So I have no back ground knowledge nor right to criticize.

But I was quite impressed they are crossing the stage from corner to corner with very beautiful manner! Crossing by Jumping, turning, posing, combination of these and others.

Usually we move some distance from one place to the other by walking or running. It depends on how much we are hurrying. I guess in Ballet, they integrated that method of moving into a kind of ultimate manner.

Now the purpose is no more reaching to the destination, but moving itself.
How to cross the distance.

And when we think back about our lives, those are just like crossing the distance as whole life time. Some have some destination as a goal. But that is just an additional for entire lives.

In that meaning, I imagine Ballet could represent lives by showing How we can cross distance as LIFE.
